Of the 89,375 venues we hold across New Zealand, 72,142 are places to eat — 81% of the total. They break down as 13,367 cafés, 31,320 restaurants, 22,636 takeaways, 2,361 bars and 2,458 pubs.
Distribution is heavily uneven. Ontario alone holds 30,715 of them — 43% of the national total — and the top three regions (Ontario, Québec and British Columbia) account for 78% between them. The thinnest is Nunavut with 23. Averaged across the 6,205 named places we hold, that is 11.6 per town — a figure almost no individual town matches, because the median settlement has a handful and the cities have hundreds.
49,718 of the 72,142 eating places carry a cuisine tag (69%). Nationally the most common are coffee shop (6,893), pizza (6,832), burger (5,969), sandwich (4,321), chinese (2,665) and chicken (2,649). Those proportions are worth holding in mind when a town page says it over- or under-indexes on something: the comparison is always against this national mix, not against an ideal.
On data quality: 18,253 publish opening hours (25%), 19,907 list a website (28%), and 3,893 record step-free access (5%). 4,237 carry at least six recorded attributes, which is the bar a venue has to clear before we give it a page of its own — 6% of the total. The rest are listed on their town pages. Every gap is an unrecorded attribute rather than a known absence, because all of this comes from open data: OpenStreetMap for the venues themselves, public registers for verification. Nothing here is scraped from a commercial directory, and no venue has paid to appear or to rank.
