Of the 78,070 venues we hold across New Zealand, 51,371 are places to eat — 66% of the total. They break down as 10,105 cafés, 28,244 restaurants, 10,760 takeaways, 1,747 bars and 515 pubs.
Distribution is heavily uneven. Kerala alone holds 10,102 of them — 20% of the national total — and the top three regions (Kerala, Karnataka and Maharashtra) account for 48% between them. The thinnest is Lakshadweep with 3. Averaged across the 12,254 named places we hold, that is 4.2 per town — a figure almost no individual town matches, because the median settlement has a handful and the cities have hundreds.
15,625 of the 51,371 eating places carry a cuisine tag (30%). Nationally the most common are indian (4,591), regional (2,148), coffee shop (2,048), pizza (1,911), burger (1,456) and chinese (1,319). Those proportions are worth holding in mind when a town page says it over- or under-indexes on something: the comparison is always against this national mix, not against an ideal.
On data quality: 5,884 publish opening hours (11%), 1,978 list a website (4%), and 787 record step-free access (2%). 350 carry at least six recorded attributes, which is the bar a venue has to clear before we give it a page of its own — 1% of the total. The rest are listed on their town pages. Every gap is an unrecorded attribute rather than a known absence, because all of this comes from open data: OpenStreetMap for the venues themselves, public registers for verification. Nothing here is scraped from a commercial directory, and no venue has paid to appear or to rank.
