Of the 17,658 venues we hold across New Zealand, 4,438 are places to stay — 25% of the total. They break down as 775 hotels, 1,152 motels, 478 b&bs and guest houses, 414 hostels, 282 serviced apartments and 1,337 holiday parks and campgrounds.

Distribution is heavily uneven. Canterbury alone holds 564 of them — 13% of the national total — and the top three regions (Canterbury, Auckland and Waikato) account for 35% between them. The thinnest is Chatham Islands with 7. Averaged across the 1,482 named places we hold, that is 3.0 per town — a figure almost no individual town matches, because the median settlement has a handful and the cities have hundreds.

Accommodation is distributed quite differently from eating places. It concentrates where visitors go rather than where people live, which is why Canterbury and the tourist regions carry a share out of proportion to their population, and why the ratio of beds to cafés is one of the more revealing numbers on any town page.

On data quality: 114 publish opening hours (3%), 1,633 list a website (37%), and 137 record step-free access (3%). 6 carry at least six recorded attributes, which is the bar a venue has to clear before we give it a page of its own — 0% of the total. The rest are listed on their town pages. Every gap is an unrecorded attribute rather than a known absence, because all of this comes from open data: OpenStreetMap for the venues themselves, public registers for verification. Nothing here is scraped from a commercial directory, and no venue has paid to appear or to rank.
