Of the 64,640 venues we hold across New Zealand, 15,929 are places to stay — 25% of the total. They break down as 2,378 hotels, 2,395 motels, 969 b&bs and guest houses, 441 hostels, 1,132 serviced apartments and 8,614 holiday parks and campgrounds.

Distribution is heavily uneven. New South Wales alone holds 3,934 of them — 25% of the national total — and the top three regions (New South Wales, Queensland and Victoria) account for 59% between them. The thinnest is Australian Capital Territory with 74. Averaged across the 6,269 named places we hold, that is 2.5 per town — a figure almost no individual town matches, because the median settlement has a handful and the cities have hundreds.

Accommodation is distributed quite differently from eating places. It concentrates where visitors go rather than where people live, which is why New South Wales and the tourist regions carry a share out of proportion to their population, and why the ratio of beds to cafés is one of the more revealing numbers on any town page.

On data quality: 214 publish opening hours (1%), 4,075 list a website (26%), and 286 record step-free access (2%). 25 carry at least six recorded attributes, which is the bar a venue has to clear before we give it a page of its own — 0% of the total. The rest are listed on their town pages. Every gap is an unrecorded attribute rather than a known absence, because all of this comes from open data: OpenStreetMap for the venues themselves, public registers for verification. Nothing here is scraped from a commercial directory, and no venue has paid to appear or to rank.
