That shape above is New Zealand, drawn from nothing but the positions of the venues in this dataset — no coastline, no map tiles, just 17,649 points, each one somewhere you can eat or sleep. It is the most honest picture of the country this site can draw, and it is also the reason the site exists: the data is public, and nobody had assembled it into a form you could use.

13,213 places to eat and 4,436 to stay, across 1,514 named towns and suburbs and all 17 regions. It is not spread evenly: Auckland (5,759), Canterbury (2,294) and Waikato (1,717) hold 55% of everything between them, and Auckland alone accounts for 1,270.

What this is

6,830 venues carry a cuisine tag (39%). The most common across New Zealand are indian (681), burger (670), chinese (666), pizza (641) and coffee shop (584). Those national proportions are the baseline every town page is measured against — when a page says somewhere over-indexes on one thing, this is what it is being compared to.

The balance between eating and sleeping runs 75% to 25% here. That is a fairly ordinary balance — neither a tourist economy nor a purely domestic one.

On data quality, which sets a hard ceiling on what any of these pages can tell you: 4,050 venues publish opening hours (23%), 4,479 list a website, and 1,031 record step-free access. 459 carry enough detail for a page of their own; the rest are listed on their town pages, because a page with a name and a map pin on it is worth nobody's time.
